In advance cases of periodontitis, the Periostat, an antibiotic containing doxycycline hyclate, is prescribed with the gums treatment.

Given in small doses, 20 mg, Periostat does not act as an antibiotic, but as a regulator of the body’s response. It prevents the production of destructive factors of the gums, the collagenase, allowing the gums to heal.

The Periostat has to be taken twice a day, a capsule in the morning and another in the evening. It is taken with a glass of water. The Periostat cannot be taken during meals. Take it an hour before the meal, or 2 hours after.

The optimal time for taking  Periostat from 6 to 9 months. After the Periostat treatment, its benefits continue for a couple of months. It is important to have a follow-up with the dentist every 3 months.

The following people cannot take Periostat : pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, people allergic to tetracycline and people suffering from liver diseases.

Certain considerations must be taken if you are taking other medications : a diminishment of Coumadin might be required, the efficiency of oral contraceptive might be diminished, do not

take antiacids or iron vitamins in the 4 hours following the Periostat, do not take Periostat during a Penicillin treatment or antibiotic, retake Periostat on week after the end of the antibiotic treatment.

Smokers and diabetic people can take Periostat, as it contributes to a better control of diabetes.

According to clinical studies, Periostat is well tolerated and does not interfere with antibiotic treatments, nor does it cause hypersensitivity to light.

Periostat is covered by most private medical insurance.
