Persistent bad breath is a sign of untreated gums called periodontitis. Bad breath is often accompanied by bleeding of the gums, sensitivity to warm and cold food, loss of gums material, and in advanced cases, loose teeth.
Bad breath is the result of a bacterial infection caused by the accumulation of food between the teeth and gums. That food contributes to the bacterial growth in those regions, leading to a body response: inflammation.
The inflammation destroys the bacterias, but also the surrounding tissues. The smell of the dead cells, accumulated blood and bruised tissues are responsible of the persistent smell of bad breath.
Bad breath marks a sign of advanced infection of the gums. The disease should be detected as soon as possible because there are two dangers. The first one, this disease is not painful, but can alarmingly progress and give an impression that is no reason to worry. The second one, the bone support lost does not regenerate or very little, so the damages are cumulative and irreversible.
