I’m a Smoker, is Teeth Whitening Still Possible?

Yes, but during the treatment period, the patient will have to
cease smoking. The carcinogenic potential of nicotine is substantially increased in the presence of peroxide. It takes 24 hours after the treatment for the harmful effect of peroxide to disappear.
For the home kit bleaching, the patient will have to cease smoking for the 2 weeks of the trays treatment.
For those who are
NOT willing to stop
smoking, the alternative lies in the clinical “laser” bleach. The clinical
bleaching is faster and more efficient. Since the whole procedure barely lasts two
hours, the patient will only have to avoid smoking for the 24 hours following
the treatment instead of the two weeks of bleaching at home.
Although the clinical bleach is faster
and more efficient, the expected
results will be approximately the same than the home kit
bleaching. The only difference is in the treatment duration,
and therefore, the non-smoking period.
