The long term retention is

It is important to underline that

the overlapping bottom incisors

will happen with or without orthodontic treatment. Contrary to popular beliefs, this overlap is not related to wisdom teeth.

After an INVISALIGN treatment, it is necessary to wear a night retention aligner to preserve the obtained result. Just like a conventional orthodontic treatment, the retention aligner are required after the end of the treatment. 

The causes of those post treatment dental movement are not due to the stability of the treatment, but to the natural aging process. It has been proven that cartilages become bigger with time. Therefore, the nose, chin and ears take more place with time. Unfortunately, this volume increase cannot be reversed.

The chin grows by the ascending branches situated just under the ears. With the years, the chin will have the tendency to move forward. This will result in pushing the bottom anterior teeth on the top teeth, causing the natural overlapping of the bottom incisors.
