for joy, for life
A root canal allows the healing of a tooth that contains a cavity that has reached the pulp where the nerve lies in order to avoid a bacterial infection. Once the bacteria have penetrated the pulp, the tooth must be devitalized.
A tooth that has had a root canal becomes fragile, and is at risk of breaking. Therefore, it is recommended to restore such a tooth with a crown or at least a dental post to give it solidity.
The placement of a root canal is done in five steps:
• Application of a local anesthesia.
• Elimination of the cavity and of the living tissues inside the tooth (i.e. dental pulp).
• Cleaning of the inside of the tooth by a mechanic action and irrigating with a disinfectant.
• Sealing the canal with an isolating polymer (very biocompatible) used in conjunction with a root canal sealer.
• Placing of the dental post, if necessary, and restoring the tooth with a filling or a crown.
Root canals are required when:
• A deep cavity has reached the dental pulp, at the nerve level.
• A filling is not enough to restore a broken tooth.
• Pulp is irritated by a trauma or a filling that it too deep.
• A tooth needs a crown but needs the additional support of a post.
• Periapical lesion can be seen on an x-ray.
