PLAQUE

DEFINITION:

Plaque is a white or yellowish film that forms at the surface of the teeth from food debris, composed mainly of bacteria, depending on the location of the mouth.


SYMPTOMS:

•Mineralized plaque becomes tartar, which can cause cavities and gum disease.


TREATMENTS:

•Careful brushing of the teeth.


PREVENTION:

•Brush the teeth two to three times a day (especially after meals).

•Floss at least once a day.

•Regular dental exams (i.e. at least twice a year).

•Ask the dentist if sealants are appropriate.

•Have a balanced diet and avoid snacks in between meals.
