DEFINITION:
Gingivitis, commonly known as gum disease, is defined as a bacterial infection or an inflammation of the gums. In severe cases, and if untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontitis, which is a more aggressive state of the disease, characterized as the destruction of the bone and the tissues supporting the teeth.

SYMPTOMS:
•Bleeding of gums after teeth brushing or flossing.
•Red and swollen gums.
•Persistent bad breath or constant bad taste in the mouth.
•Loose teeth.
•Gradual disappearance of gums or wearing away of the teeth.
TREATMENTS:
•Eliminate the infection and to stop the progression. See gum treatments.
PREVENTION:
•Stop the use of tobacco.
•Maintain good oral hygiene (i.e. flossing).
•Have a rich diet composed of vitamins and other antioxidants, to reinforce the immune system.
•Avoid grinding the teeth.
•Reduce the stress.
