DISCOLOURATION

DEFINITION:

Tooth discolouration is defined as a dark stains on its enamel, or when the whole tooth becomes darker.

SYMPTOMS:

Dark stains on the surface of the teeth.

•Dark coloured teeth.


TREATMENTS:

Teeth whitening (Laser or Home kit).

•Composite or porcelain veneers.


PREVENTION:

Avoid the following causes of teeth discolouration:

•Tobacco use.

•Certain foods (i.e. coffee, tea, red wine and acidic soft drinks).

•Poor oral hygiene.

•Certain medications (i.e. tetracycline or doxycycline).

•Mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine.

•Grey amalgam fillings can stain a restored tooth.

•Excessive ingestion of fluoride (fluorosis).
