BITE SPLINTS
DEFINITION:
A bite splint is an acrylic tray worn at any time of the day, to prevent the teeth on top from coming in contact with the teeth on the bottom. It is a solution to those who suffer from bruxism (grinding of the teeth) or TMJ problems (problems of the jaws).
To optimize comfort and retention, this supporting appliance is custom-made from an impression of the teeth.
The bite splint can last a few years depending on the severity of the bruxism, though it need to be redone every two to three years.
APPLICATIONS:
Bite splints are usually employed for badly positioned jaw problems, usually leading to significant neuromuscular problems (TMJ problems). In order to remedy to those problems, a bite splint functions by:
•Partially absorbing the forces of bruxism and of clenching.
•Easing the tension as it releases the muscles of the jaws.
•Relieving the joints of the jaws, therefore reducing the pain.
•Limiting the progression of the teeth deterioration.
